Frequently asked questions

Can you explain what is going on physiologically?

Of course.

Breathwork alters the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the body, directly influencing the nervous system. Through slow, controlled breathing, we activate the parasympathetic nervous system—the body’s rest and digest response—leading to a lowered heart rate, reduced levels of stress hormones, and an overall sense of calm.

Conversely, during faster or deeper breathing cycles (as practiced in conscious connected breathwork) we temporarily boost alertness by modifying our blood chemistry and stimulating the sympathetic nervous system. This shift can create altered sensations due to changes in carbon dioxide levels. Following this, breath holds result in a gradual increase in carbon dioxide, helping our bodies to build a tolerance to it. This process not only enhances calmness but also overall endurance, effectively training the nervous system to better regulate carbon dioxide and changing our responses to stress.

Additionally, the varying breathing patterns used during a breathwork session have a profound impact on the vagus nerve, which plays a key role in regulating mood, stress, digestion, and heart function.

Research indicates that breathwork can significantly alleviate stress and anxiety, improve focus and sleep, and aid in emotional regulation by influencing brain activity, heart rate variability, and the body's overall stress response.

Why do you talk about energy?

Everything is made of energy, including us. Practising conscious connected breathwork generates a powerful electromagnetic field and current that flows through the body, raising its vibration. In this higher vibrational state, the body releases densities, transforming lower vibrations into higher ones. This process can help release negative emotions and trauma from both the body and mind, creating a clearer channel to attract the energy you want.

Are there any contraindications to breathwork?

I don’t recommend breath holds for anyone who is pregnant, has cardiovascular disease, or is dealing with a psychotic illness. Most people can enjoy conscious connected breathwork cycles, but I adjust the activation rate for certain individuals. I also make sure clients sign a disclaimer beforehand.

Do people ever cry during a session?

In my experience, every session brings a profound sense of peace and self-awareness, leaving people feeling uplifted and energised while deeply relaxed. At times, a few silent tears may fall as we release emotions brought on by stress, anxiety, or recent grief. This is a safe space, and it’s important to remember that everyone is focused on their own journey. I always set aside time for integration at the end of a session so you can return fully to the present moment.

If you’re carrying deep-seated trauma, I recommend seeking psychotherapy for support, using breathwork only as a complementary tool in your recovery. In such cases, I’d also suggest a one-to-one session.
